AGIOS NIKOLAOS
Agios Nikolaos is a beautiful, small town in Eastern Crete.
The town is named after the Greek Orthodox Saint Nickolas who is also the patron saint of sailors. The name,as well as the location of the town on Mirabello Bay ( meaning beautiful view in Latin ) is distinctive of how important the sea is for our town.
Agios Nikolaos is all surrounded by water. There are many beautiful, sandy beaches with crystal clear waters that bustle with life during summer time.
Another beautiful part of the town is the marina, which hosts hundreds of sailing boats and yachts-this shows the long sailing and naval history of the town, which is also marked by the harbour . Apart from the cruise ships that stop here during the summer, there are small boats that take visitors to the nearby island of Spinalonga, a former Venetian fortress which later on turned to one of the last leper colonies in Europe. Spinalonga has recently been nominated as a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site.

But above all, what makes Agios Nikolaos really special is the beautiful lake right in the middle of the town.
“Voulismeni” Lake, meaning “Sunken” Lake ,is the most famous landmark of Agios Nikolaos, the ultimate meeting place for people of all ages and the number one attraction for the visitors of the town.

In fact, this is the view we enjoy from our school, the 1st Junior High School of Agios Nikolaos.
Our school is a State Junior High School with 30 teachers and approximately 300 students ( aged 12-15 ) from various national, religious and social backgrounds. Almost one third of the students population is made up of children of immigrant families. Most of these students were born in Greece, but may still have difficulties with the Greek language and thus feel discouraged. In addition, there are students with special educational needs, namely dyslexia, autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Our goal is to make all students feel welcomed and safe, to support and encourage them to overcome any difficulties and progress at a personal and educational level.
The curriculum consists of subjects like History, Ancient and Modern Greek, Literature, Maths, Science, Physical Education, Religious Education, ICT, Art, Music, English as the first foreign language and either French or German as the second one. There is also a variety of extracurricular activities available, such as the reading club, the drama club, several eco teams and clubs focusing on intercultural education.
Students also take part in sports activities and competitions, attend extra workshops and performances and go on educational trips organized by the school. Our school also participates actively in various networks of environmental education for sustainability, including the European network of eco schools, and it is also a UNESCO school.
